Like making a quilt, the pieces seemed to fall in place for Bonny and Don Hartung as they purchased the quilt shop in Hutchinson and renamed it Quilt Haven on Main. It all happened very quickly. The Hartungs, who live in the Island View Heights area of Hutchinson, were driving down the main street of Hutchinson one evening and noticed a “for sale” sign going up in the window of the Thimbleberries retail quilt shop. This intrigued Bonny because she ran a weekend quilt retreat from her house in Hutchinson, and she didn’t want her favorite quilt shop to close. Because she has been in the quilt-making business for 10 years, Bonny arranged to meet with the owner of the Thimbleberries, Lynette Jensen, and the realtor who was selling the building. Jensen, at the time, was leasing the building for her quilting business. When Bonny asked Lynette if she was willing to sell the retail business, Jensen immediately said yes, and the pieces started coming together. In two weeks the deal was done. The Hartungs bought the building to go with it. This was all done in the summer of 2012. It was Jensen’s idea to rename it Quilt Haven on Main, and Don jokingly said this makes me “a man of the cloth.” The Hartungs are both graduates of Hector High School. Don keeps himself busy operating the family farm near Cosmos. Bonny and Don were thinking retirement, but those thoughts have been put on hold. They plan to be working at the store only part time and will rely on a staff of five experienced employees to run the business on a daily basis. Managing the store is Connie Lindmeyer, who has been with the business for 15 years, and quilt specialists Julie Jergens, Beth Rakow, Lori Bleck and Diane Baumann are available to give classes and advice on quilt-making. Quilt Haven on Main is open Monday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is located at 7 North Main Street. Besides having books, fabrics, notions and gifts available, Quilt Haven on Main offers free sewing time, with sewing tables, chairs, irons, ironing boards, cutting tables and accessories provided. Some of the fabric lines available at Quilt Haven are Andover, Moda, Maywood, Hoffman (Batiks), Riley Blake, RJR, wools and many more. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday, March 21, 22 and 23 there will be a Fabric Farm Fest Shop Hop at Quilt Haven on Main. Four quilt shops will be displaying fabric patterns and kits. The four quilt shops are DeAnn’s Country Village Shoppe from Litchfield, Flying Goose Quilt Shop from New London, Gone to Pieces Quilt Shop from Kimball and the Quilt Haven on Main from Hutchinson. Visit all four quilt shops and qualify to win one of two sets of tickets for two on the bus to the Minnesota Quilt Show in Duluth on June 13. March is donation-matching month at the Food Shelf, so bring a Food Shelf donation to each shop. You could win a prize at each shop on your hop. A grand opening is being planned for April 6 at the Quilt Haven on Main. Watch for more information about this on their website, local news media or stop in at the store. Preliminary plans are to have Darlene Zimmerman, who has written seven books on quilting, and Gundrun Erla, who grew up in Iceland and will give you inspiration on making quilts with a Scandanavian flair, attend the opening.
